Every year, Climb Quest host a work experience student from a local school. It’s a great way for someone to learn more about working in leisure and be active as a part of the Climbing Team.
This year, we were very pleased to welcome Marvyn from a local Secondary School, who did a fantastic job.
We asked him a few questions about his experience with us here at Climb Quest:
To learn key skills about the business and how Climb Quest operates. I was interested in what goes on behind the scenes.
I have been cleaning, helping kids with their harnesses and clipping in and out the walls. I was also operating the extreme challenges. One day we deep cleaned all the holds on the Speed Wall.
My favourite thing was the belay cleaning and slinging in on Ascendor, Jungle Gym and Face 2 Face. It was fun to hang at the top and looking down was cool.
My least favourite thing to do was wiping the mats as it wasn’t the most fun activity.
The staff I worked with were helpful. Paul gave me the most guidance, Dieo always offered help and taught me the extremes and Archie and Pia were helpful and supportive.
Communication- communicating with kids, when they were scared I gave them encouragement.
Organisation- when managing the extremes there could be big queues so I had to control them and get the climbers into their suits and helmets. We also had an evening of back-to-back exclusives with 40 children in each and it was very busy.
Cleaning
It was a real pleasure having Marvyn with us, as noted by our two Managers, Paul and Jamie.
It was great to have Marvyn join us for his work experience placement, watching him grow in confidence, integrating himself to the team was a real highlight.
Together we set out agreed objectives all based around the core element of the role which is customer service, he helped run all the different type of climbing sessions from toddlers to SEND groups and was able to adapt and use his initiative.
He was challenged and taken out of his comfort zone, got involved with administration tasks as well as FOH operations, Marvyn worked peak time at the weekend and observed the centre at its busiest.
During his exit interview we spoke about future employment opportunities which I would be happy to receive an application from him to come and join us for his first job.

Marvyn was a pleasure to work with during his time here. He was not afraid to get stuck in and experience what it's like to work in a busy leisure environment.
He helped on various Front of House operations such as setting up parties, restocking cafe items for the weekend. Marvyn was great at following instructions and was very helpful in assisting the staff in closing down the centre.
He was a great asset to the team, and we would encourage him to apply in the future when there is a job available.
